Temporary protection can be extended until 31 March 2028
The EU Council has extended temporary protection for people from Ukraine. How the extension will work in Czechia and what to watch out for.

The EU Council has again extended temporary protection for people from Ukraine, this time until March 2028. The Ministry of the Interior announced it on the Information Portal for Foreigners (update of 4 August 2026). The ministry has yet to publish the exact registration dates for 2027.
The procedure in Czechia is set by Section 7b of Act No. 65/2022 Coll. and has two steps. First you register online through the ministry's form by 15 March. Then, by 30 September, you visit a ministry office to get a new visa sticker. If you complete both steps in 2027, your temporary protection lasts until 31 March 2028.
Since 5 August 2026, people aged 18–60 who are subject to military service in Ukraine must prove they have met their military obligations when filing a new application. According to the ministry, this is not required when extending protection already granted until 31 March 2028.
What it means for you
- You have temporary protection: watch for the ministry to open registration. The law allows no other way to extend it (Act No. 65/2022 Coll., Section 7b(4)).
- You moved and did not report the change: bring proof of accommodation to the visa sticker appointment, otherwise it will not be issued (Act No. 65/2022 Coll., Section 7b(6)).
- For a child under 15, a parent or other legal guardian registers.
